Population: One – Should you get it?

About The Game

Population: One is an action packed battle royale. Like all the other Battle Royale games, you run around a giant map with your squad mates – picking up guns and ammo, prematurely pushing an enemy team, and running from them until you’re the last one standing. Unlike all the other Battle Royale’s, Population One allows you to climb ANYTHING and soar from high places of interest all over the map. So should you get it?

Disclaimer: These are all exclusively my opinions and, if you haven’t already, checkout the the blog post “What Is Future Fruit?” to read more about the biases I have and the blog as a whole. There, you can also find a more in-depth summary about what these categories mean

As always, I will include a TL;DR at the bottom of the page for your convenience.

Immersion

Thoughts

Population: One is an amazing VR experience. To shoot your enemies, Population: One has beautifully integrated some of the best VR shooting mechanics into a battle royale. This means reloading is not just pressing a button and shooting requires some skill and precision. To me, these qualities make gameplay so much more immersive. It is truly stressful when you run out of ammo in the middle of a gun fight but it’s also extremely satisfying when you land a shot on an enemy that is far away. By far, however, Population: One’s best feature is how you traverse through the map. While walking using locomotion in this game feels great, it is often more strategic to CLIMB. By alternating between grip buttons as you place your hands on a wall or tree, you can lunge yourself to higher ground in no time.  Climbing in this game is not only really satisfying but makes for a fantastic workout. When you want to get down, all you have to do is walk off the edge and spread your wings. By sticking your arms out in a T-pose, you’re soaring around the map. Everything about soaring – the beautiful sights, peaceful sounds, and occasional gunfire that make you feel like the duck in duck hunter, easily makes it one of the best feature in the game.

Score

Because of the amazing shooting mechanics, the ability to climb literally anything, and the mostly peaceful soaring feature, I give

Population: One a 10 in Immersion.

Playability

Thoughts

Like many Battle Royale’s, Population: One can be very addicting. Trying to get the Victory Royale is the main goal of the game and practicing is essential to getting it. What Population: One does the best, however, is online player interaction. Population: One makes making friends super easy! Jumping into a game with some random people and pulling off the victory royale is the best feeling. I’ve met a lot of awesome people on this game and it makes it one of the best reasons to keep coming back. On top of the social aspects, Population: One is consistently updating their game. Just like Fortnite or Warzone, they add guns, change map locations, and even have a tiered season’s pass to unlock new skins and camoes for your guns. Just recently they added melee weapons like swords and knives. These additions keep the game fresh and interesting!

Score

Because of the online community, the constantly updating map, and available weapons, I give

Population: One a 10 in Playability.

Value

Thoughts

In the newer updates of Population: One, they’ve added a season system that exist in games like Fortnite and Warzone.  After purchasing the $30 game, you also can buy a season’s pass if you want to unlock unique new skins and camos for your gun. Without the season’s pass, there are still plenty of unlockables but they are limited. While the season passes were an obvious next step in their business, it should be noted that other games that implement this, like Fortnite and Warzonek, are free to play.

Score

Because the game itself is so fun, even if you decide to ignore the season’s pass, I give

Population: One an 8 in Value.

Worth It.

Overall

Population: One is an ambitious concept that is pulled off amazingly! The shooting feels great and flying around feels even better. This game is a blast to play with your friends and it’s a great way to meet new people. Because of this, I give

Population: One a 9 Overall

If you are comfortable moving around using thumbstick locomotion, you should definitely get this game!
